Trilok Gurtu Band
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Join us for a stunning showcase of matchless precision, dazzling solos, percolating rhythms and deep-rooted grooves from Indian master percussionist and composer Trilok Gurtu.
Throughout his illustrious career, Trilok Gurtu has stood at the confluence of where Indian classical music, Western jazz, African music and Brazilian music meet. It’s been part of his modus operandi for five decades — making music that defies easy categorisation.
A world-class, virtuoso percussionist, now in his mid-sixties, Trilok Gurtu has collaborated with a who's who of jazz greats over his long career. Starting with John McLaughlin in whose trio Trilok flourished as the featured soloist for 4 years. Since then, Joe Zawinul, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Evans, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Holland have all been attracted to Trilok's burning sense of rhythm.
Born into a highly musical family in Bombay, India where his grandfather was a noted Sitar player and his mother Shobha Gurtu, a classical singing star and constant influence, Gurtu is deeply rooted in the Indian tradition. He has used this background to “plough his own furrow” with his own group to great effect.
Joining him for these shows will be Hamburg-based group made up of trumpeter Frederik Köster, pianist Jesse Milliner and electric bassist Jonathan Cuniado.
